Long Night of Children's Cancer Research 2010

Last update on: 11/08/2010

European Dimension of the children's Cancer Research Institute

Vienna - On the 10th June 2010 the team of the Children's Cancer Research Institute extended an invitation to the "Long Night" at the research institute, Zimmermannplatz 10, 1090 Vienna, in order to bring interested visitors closer to the world of science and research through participation experiments and fascinating lectures, and to facilitate direct dialogue with childhood cancer researchers. Discovery tours through the laboratory were on the agenda alongside interesting talks which were this year dedicated to the following focal theme: The role of St. Anna Children's Cancer Research Institute as a coordinator and/or important cooperative partner in research projects that have been and are being funded by the European Commission.

Dr. Beatrix Karl (picture in the middle at the top), Austrian Minister of Science and Research, visited the event as a guest of honour and congratulate, together with the CliniClowns, on the successful work and achievements of the highly committed team of CCRI researchers.

Das TeamIn accordance with this year's motto, "European Dimension of the Children's Cancer Research Institute", university lecturer Dr. Heinrich Kovar, scientific director and head of the St. Anna/CCRI study group for molecular biology, presented the role of CCRI within European research projects and introduced the successful EC-funded projects in the field of childhood cancer research PROTHETS, EET-Pipeline and ASSET.

University lecturer Dr. Peter Ambros, deputy leader of the St. Anna institute and head of the St. Anna/CCRI study group tumour biology, focused in his lecture regarding his EC-funded project ENQUA (funding through DG V, Europe against Cancer) on the question: Where is the pan-European quality control for genetic tumour diagnostics leading?

The leader of the St. Anna/CCRI working group „Studies & Statistics“, and since 2009 President of SIOP-E (European Society for Paediatric Oncology), introduced two important EC-funded projects, SIOPEN-R-NET and ENCCA, which encompass the development of a European research network for young patients suffering from cancer.

DIRECT project manager Sandra Brezina reported on the major objectives and creative measures that were taken to communicate the message "Overcoming Cancer with Research" of the EC-funded science communication project DIRECT to the general public.

Great interest was also generated by the talks given by two former childhood cancer patients, who lectured - as per their designated title "We did it - step by step" - on their experiences and their dealings with their cancer diseases, as well as life after the end of the intensive treatment.

The medical leader of the hemato-oncological department of the St. Anna Children's Hospital Dr. Eva Frey presented the EC-project  PANCARESURFUP, a European initiative to achieve standardisation of aftercare of childhood cancer survivors.

TV documentary "Little heroes - great opportunities. Childhood cancer research in Europe":

As a visual highlight the EC-funded film production "Little heroes - great opportunities. Childhood cancer research in Europe" was shown twice during this year's "Long Night" to communicate established successes and future challenges of the paediatric-oncological community in Europe.
