Past Successes and Future Challenges in Pediatric Oncology
During a three-day symposium from the 15th to the 17th of May at the Billrothhaus in Vienna, with the title of "Established successes, future challenges in pediatric oncology" over thirty European children's cancer experts met. The event was organised by the St. Anna Kinderkrebsforschung (Children's Cancer Research Institute) in light of the EC funded science-communication project "Overcoming Cancer with Research".
The symposium was divided into 5 meetings with 5 work groups each.
Session 1 / Aftercare of Pediatric Cancer Patients
treated the aftercare of children's cancer patients, during which there was particular focus on social re-integration (job opportunities, insurance inquiries, education).
Session 2 / Treatment Standards and Optimization
put particular emphasis on the practice of the implementation of international treatment optimisation studies with decree of the EU-Directive 2001/20/EG. The problems of new assessments within the governmental frame, during the implementation of these studies was discussed.
There was an overview over the "historic" effects of the treatment optimisation studies within pediatric oncology and it was demonstrated how important they are for the treatment of children's cancer.
Session 3 / Established Therapeutic Compounds
was focused on the use of historically established medicine in pediatric oncology, which remains un-licensed although its proven longterm successful and established treatment for children. Especially important are the advantages for patients and clinicians, if they are in the position to use licensed medication and which possibilities would be available to them. Respecitively, which would be ideal to awaken an interest in their licensing beyond any commerical interest.
An overview was given over which forms of cancer, which type and which substance relationship is impossible in pediatric oncology, if only licensed medication is used. It also became clear how much experience is needed for a lot of non-licensed, but indispensable medication in pediatric oncology. Minimal licensing claims, including financial aspects and the division of work was discussed.
Session 4 / EC-funded Projects in Pediatric Oncology
Research-projects with EU-funding were introduced
Session 5 / Innovative Drugs for Pediatric Use
The focus of this meeting was the use of innovative medicine in pediatric oncology.
