High survival rate for children with leukaemia
The challenge to beat childhood leukaemia is truly international. There are efficient natioanl and international networks of child cancer experts. Across Europe, physicians in child cancer facilities are saving the lives of more than 80 percent of children and adolescents with leukaemia, but this is often at the cost of aggressive treatments which may result in preliminary and/or lasting medical and/or psychosocial effects.
The future goals of research
The way ahead in pediatric oncology is to gain an even better insight into the biological characteristics of the malignant cancer cells, and subsequently develop treatments specialized to the individual needs of the child that are less harsh but at the same time will offer all children and youths affliced with cancer a chance of survival.

Tony Rizzo – founder of „Alternative Hair“
Following the death of his son Valentino who died of leukaemia aged 3 years old, Tony Rizzo launched the “Alternative Hair Show” in 1983 to help raise funds for Leukaemia Research in the UK. At the time, leukaemia was still a poorly understood illness that affected both children and adults often with tragic consequences. Following his personal tragedy, Tony was eager to do something in honour of Valentino to help Leukaemia Research scientists in their quest to find better treatments and a cure for leukaemia and related blood cancers.
From humble beginnings, the “Alternative Hair Show” has grown into the world’s most prestigious annual hairdressing event, hosting leading teams and inspirational hair artists from all over the globe.
In doing so, the “Alternative Hair Show” has raised an astonishing amount of over £7 million for research and continues to be a key resource to help Leukaemia Research meet its fundraising targets.
„We have good reasons to be optimistic about the future for patients of all ages. The advances in the treatment of leukaemia and other blood cancers have been truly remarkable compared to those grimmer days 27 years ago when we at Alternative Hair first began our crusade for Leukaemia Research,“
Tony und Maggie Rizzo
Alternative Hair Show goes Vienna
