The result of the 2005 conducted Eurobarometer Studies (download as PDF) concerning science and society within Eu countries suggested that:
- respectively a third of the inquired did not understand or was not interested in scientific questions,
- further reasons for the disinterest in science and technology were cited as age of the inquired, lack of time and lack of relevance within their personal life

The web portal "Science in Society" was developed with the aim to fascinate EU citizens for scientific topics and make findings of research publically accessible.
The direct usage of research very often remains inaccessible to the European citizens. As the breakthrough of a research project is very often the product of several complex partial results, it is specifically difficult to explain the logic of medicine based upon findings and the meaningfulness of funding many, amongst which some very costly, partial projects.
